Sacramento Movers Share Tips To Help Children Ease Into The Moving Process

Moving is stressful for kids, but there are ways to make it easier on them. It’s important to inform children about moving plans to move as soon as possible. The more time they have to prepare, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists. Let them participate in the decision-making. If children feel included and take ownership of their new home, the transition will go much easier.

Moving is a family project. Share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family. Give everyone an age-appropriate responsibility. Have the kids decorate their boxes. And then, once you are in your new house, it will be easier for them to find their stuff.

The experts at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® believe these tips will help get children through a move:

  • Throughout the move, stay upbeat and calm. Give children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings.
  • Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move. Reassure them they aren't alone and it’s OK to have these feelings.
  • Involve kids in the packing process and start packing items that will be needed right away.
  • Sentimental items that children treasure like special blankets, beloved stuffed animals and photo albums should be kept in a separate bag or box.
  • Make sure children say goodbye to the important people in their lives. Help children prepare a list of phone numbers, e-mails and addresses of important people in their lives. Prepare cards that have their name and new address on them to hand out to friends. Child psychology experts agree if kids know they can stay in touch with loved ones it will make the move less traumatic.

Sacramento Movers Say That Packing Supplies Make All The Difference

No one likes to pack – it’s a tedious, time-consuming job. But rather than risking damage and throwing things in bags and laundry baskets, experts suggest investing in the right supplies to ensure belongings arrive at the new location unharmed. Professional packing supplies and boxes are designed to withstand the moving process. Avoid used boxes. Often times they are not structurally strong enough to support possessions. And grocery store boxes often have bugs you don’t want to bring into a new home.

Packing supplies may seem expensive, but they save more money in the end.  A small investment in strong boxes, quality packing tape and wrapping paper can ensure you won’t have to pay more money replacing broken items.

Proper packing supplies include packing paper, tissue paper, bubble wrap, sealing tape, permanent markers and re-sealable plastic bags. The experts at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® recommend:
·         Packing non-essential items ahead of time. It also helps to pack one room at a time.
·         Labeling each box with a description of its contents and where it belongs, such as the kitchen or master bedroom. Using different colored permanent markers can help classify different rooms.
·         Making sure to label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items with “Fragile.”
·         Using boxes designed for the items being packed – dish pack for dishes, wardrobe box for clothing.
·         Trying to pack all electronic equipment, like stereos, in the original boxes. Otherwise use low-static bubble wrap when packing these items.
·         Using packing paper when wrapping fine china and precious items. The ink from printed newsprint can bleed.
·         Sealing all boxes with packing tape. This makes it easier to stack boxes and protect belongings.
·         Using packing tape instead of duct tape or interlocking the tops. Duct tape doesn’t stick to corrugated cardboard boxes.

Sacramento Movers Suggest Keeping It Simple To Move Seniors Successfully

In the next five years, experts predict 28 percent of the United States population will retire. Children and families of this “Baby Boomer” generation - people born between 1946 and 1960 - will soon find themselves helping elderly loved ones move.  Moving a senior family member is challenging – no one wants to upset that person and everyone wants the move to go as smoothly as possible. This can sometimes seem like an impossible accomplishment.

The important thing to remember when moving a senior is to stay organized and calm throughout the move. When moving a senior into a living facility, consider contacting management to find out what can be brought, what are appropriate moving hours and if they have any tips for the move.

Remember:
  • Start packing several weeks in advance. Pack early and no one becomes overwhelmed as moving day draws near.
  • Wrap small items in colored paper. This prevents items like knick-knacks from becoming lost or thrown out.
  • Label boxes on top and sides. Mark the top and sides of boxes as they’re packed. Make sure to label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items with “fragile.”
  • Pack all electronic equipment in original boxes. Otherwise use low-static bubble wrap when packing these items
  • Always use packing paper. When wrapping fine china and precious items, the ink from printed newsprint can bleed.
  • Sealing all boxes with packing tape. This makes it easier to stack and protect belongings.
  • Use boxes designed for the items you are packing. Use dish pack boxes for dishes, wardrobe boxes for clothing.
We know moving and relocating family members can be very overwhelming and emotional.  We want to work with you and your loved ones to make sure everyone is comfortable with the process. We treat customers how we’d like our own grandmothers to be treated – with care and respect.
