Sacramento Movers Give 7 Tips For Organizing The Closet After A Move

Just after moving into a new home is one of the best opportunities to give your closet a fresh start. Closets can become so full of clothing, shoes, handbags, books, and many other odds and ends that you can’t remember what all is stored in there. Closets periodically need to be weeded out and outdated items or articles of clothing that no longer fit are given up for some extra space. When it’s time to move begin with weeding out these unessential items, then be careful how you use space in the new closet to prevent it from becoming cluttered.

1. De-clutter. Weed out items from the old closet that you no longer use. Turn all your hangers backwards and write down the date of when you did so. Six months later, any clothing on hangers that are still backwards (meaning you never pulled the item out to wear it) should be donated to charity. Any out of season clothing can be placed in a storage container or suitcase and kept out of the way.

2. Clothing. When organizing a new closet, begin with what a closet normally contains: clothing. If possible, use all of the same type and color of hanger to create a uniform look. Next, organize by style of clothing, placing all outerwear together, dresses together, then shirts, then pants or skirts. You can make it easier to find items by lining them up by color from lightest to darkest.

3. Shoes. There are many ways to organize shoes. They can be stored in over-the-door pouches, lined up along the shelf above the hanger rod or placed in storage cubbies made specifically for shoes. The method you use for storing shoes will depend upon the space available and the amount of shoes to be stored.

4. Accessories. This could include purses, hats, belts, scarves, or ties. A great way to store purses is simply to line them up next to each other on a shelf using storage dividers. Hats can be stored in boxes or storage shelves. Scarves can be lined up and draped along the bottom rung of a regular hanger or you can use a custom tie and belt hanger for which also works for scarves.

5. Jewelry. For ladies, jewelry is often kept in a jumbled heap inside a box. There are two great ways to improve upon this storage solution. The first option is ultra-organized. Use storage boxes with adjustable cell dividers and place necklaces in on box, each separated in its own cubby and earrings in another box again with each pair in a separate cubby. The second option is to display jewelry as a decoration. There are many ways to do this. One option is to use a shadowbox frame and insert little pegs into the back. You can then string necklaces or earrings over each peg and hang the frame on the wall of the closet or bedroom. Jewelry trees are another great idea, though often do not hold enough items.

6. Dresser. Store miscellaneous clothing items such as t-shirts, athletic wear, socks, hosiery and underwear in dresser drawers. T-shirts and athletic wear should follow the same principle as the closet, keeping similar styles together and color coordinating each piece so that it is easy to find what you are looking for.

7. Extra Storage. If you have abundant space in the closet after all the wardrobe essentials have found a home, you can also store books or magazines lined up along closet shelves, or use the closet to store suitcases, or even office supplies such as a laptop and camera. Just remember to keep frequently used items in plain sight, occasionally used items down low, and rarely used items high in the closet.
