The
transition from living alone or living with family into a senior apartment or
assisted living facility is a big change and one that should be carefully
considered before making a decision. There are so many factors to consider when
determining what will be a good fit for a senior loved one. For example, is the
care home set in a convenient location? Does the facility have a good
reputation and do they offer the senior special assistance if needed? Look into
a few key considerations before settling on a senior facility.
Location. Consider where the senior
apartments or assisted living facility is located. Are there convenience
stores, coffee shops, or medical offices nearby that can easily be accessed? Is
the care home close enough to family that visits will be easy to carry out
regularly? It’s important that the senior does not feel too far away from loved
ones or needed resources, causing them to feel isolated.
Reputation. Before deciding on a facility,
look into its reputation. Find out how it is rated on the Better Business
Bureau and look into its history to find any records of abuse or malpractice.
Also find out what procedures are in place for handling disputes. If problems
do arise, who will you contact and what can be done to rectify the situation?
Knowing these details in advance will help you feel comfortable with leaving a
loved one at a specific care home and knowing which homes to avoid.
Special
Assistance. Find out
what extra care can be offered to residents. Are medical personnel available at
all times? Can
seniors with minimal mobility receive help in an emergency? Is physical therapy
offered or are light exercise programs in place to help seniors stay physically
active.
Quality
of Living.
Ask yourself, would I want to live here? There are some senior residences that
feel like a classy resort which you would not mind staying in for an extended
period. There are others that you’d
rather hurry to leave. Be mindful of this when selecting a residence for your
loved one. Ask if you could sit in on a meal to find out how the food is. Find
out what events and activities are available for seniors to participate in. Are
there bingo nights or outings to theater performances? If your senior wants to
stay active and engaged, these extra events will be especially important to
them.
Although
saving money can be appealing, it’s important to know what it is that you are
paying for, as not all senior homes are alike. Find out what it is that is most
important to you and your senior and be sure that the senior apartment or
assisted living facility meets the criteria you set.
