1. Add a splash of paint
The best way
to get bang for your buck when decorating is to use paint. Paint can transform
a room like no other decorating medium. Keep in mind you will need one gallon
of paint for every 350 square feet of wall to be painted. A gallon of paint
averages $15-$30 depending on the brand. Remember that the cheaper brands will
often need several coats of paint for a complete coverage while a $25 brand may
only need one coat for a finished look, so cheaper is not always really
cheaper! Be sure to get the right tools for the job including brushes, rollers,
masking tape and drip clothes. However if you’re just painting a couple walls
you can still get the job done with under $100 to spend. You will be amazed how
much paint alone will change the whole look of a room.

2. Go “green” to save “green” on furniture
Rather than
spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on new furniture… look for antiques
or second hand finds at a thrift store, garage sale or Craigslist. Reuse these
finds in a new way. Touch up the finish or paint, reupholster the cushions or just
leave it as you found it. A little wood glue and touch up paint can go a long
way when freshening up second-hand furniture. You can also change the look of
furniture you currently own by refinishing, repainting, or covering it up with
a slip cover. An ugly couch can look much better with a fresh slip cover over
it.
3. Brighten up the scene
Sometimes
all you need is the right lighting to make a room look truly great.
Strategically placed lights can work wonders at highlighting certain areas of
the room such as the “social areas” where conversations take place. If
installing permanent fixtures is out of the budget, make use of floor lamps and
table lamps or simply use a higher wattage bulb in an existing lamp. Clear
Christmas lights can be strung along door frames or coiled artistically in
clear vases for a unique lighting solution.
4. Curtains on the cheap
Create your
own curtains using bed sheets or a fabric you selected at the fabric store.
Choose any color or style you want and simply finish the edges of each panel then
fold the top down a couple inches and sew a loop for the rod to fit through.
Add curtains to every window for a little extra visual appeal.
5. Finishing touches
Use spray
paint to change the color of decorative objects or knick-knacks. You may
already have these items around your house or you might find them at a thrift
store. You might use bird figurines, candle holders, flower pots, or even pine
cones. Choose a bright, bold spray paint that matches the decorating theme of
the room and evenly coat each piece. Arrange these ornaments in clusters on the
dining table, coffee table or intersperse with books along a book shelf.
