Choosing a Storage Facility

Whether you are just storing a couple of items or an entire household, it’s important to give some thought into selecting a good storage facility. Besides just deciding on unit size and price, there are three other key factors to consider.

1. Cleanliness.
You can get a feel for the cleanliness by stepping into the front office. The cleanliness and condition of the office will give you a clue into how the entire property is kept. Notice, does it smell like cigarettes? Is there a leak in the roof? Are there ants crawling around? These are all big red flags and can give you an idea into some of the problems you might run into down the road with your items smelling of smoke, suffering water damage or bug infestation. The office should be dusted, have a clean floor and the manager should be neatly dressed and maintained. Cleanliness in the office will clue you into how the facility on the whole is maintained.

2. Security.
It’s important to make sure the facility you choose will be a safe storage solution for your belongings.  Is the storage facility gated and secured by gate code? Is the facility monitored with security cameras? Is there good lighting at night? Is there an on-site manager present? Do storages require driver’s license and current address from customers before allowing them to use a storage unit? It’s important that these facilities screen prospective tenants to ensure people with ill-intentions are not gaining access to the secure facility.

3. Customer service.
A friendly, organized, and attentive staff is important in a storage facility.  The last thing you’d want is to move into a unit where it takes a week to get in touch with the manager. During regular business hours there should always be a manager available in the office. After hours there should be a phone number to contact a staff person in case there are any issues gaining access to your unit. The manager should be able to give straight answers and maintain an efficient, organized office. The manager should be happy to interact with customers and solve problems.
